Electric hot water systems
Electric hot water systems offer a practical, cost-effective option for households, ensuring a dependable flow of hot water. Maroochydore Hot Water provides straightforward, efficient electric hot water installations and repairs with reliable service and consistent results.
Electric hot water systems
Electric storage hot water systems are still the most widely used option in Australian homes and have been produced locally for more than a century. Although the basic design remains familiar, contemporary models now use better materials and thicker, higher-density insulation around the storage cylinder. That insulation reduces heat loss and helps the unit keep water hot for longer, improving efficiency over pre-2000 models.
These units heat water in a similar way to a kettle, using an electric element, and in Queensland they commonly come in three power ratings: 1.8kW, 2.4kW and 3.6kW (with a small number of 4.8kW units in areas that can support the higher load). You’ll find these ratings across major brands such as Rheem, Dux, Vulcan, AquaMAX and Rinnai.
Bear in mind that element size doesn’t alter the energy efficiency rating: a 1.8kW element uses half the power of a 3.6kW element but simply takes about twice as long to heat the same volume of water to the same temperature.
Most electric hot water systems are built with a mild steel tank coated internally with vitreous enamel and protected by a sacrificial anode, though stainless steel tanks are offered as an alternative. The older copper-style water heaters are no longer manufactured.
Maroochydore Hot Water supplies and installs dependable electric hot water systems, and our Maroochydore plumber team can assist with installation, repairs and ongoing maintenance for gas and electric units.

I found SunCity Hot Water on google after a friend told me they had used them. I rang for a call-out and as it was Friday they said they could not do it till Monday. A while later they rung and said they would come around lunchtime as they were doing a job nearby. The job was done quickly and efficiently and I had hot water back within 2 hours. I realized the problem must have been there for months as the water was so lovely and hot that night. Very pleased that they took the time to come to me so I didn't have to wait till the Monday. An electric hot-water system
An electric hot water system can make up roughly one-third of your electricity bill if you don’t have solar PV exporting to the grid. On tariff 11, which provides power 24 hours a day at the standard rate used for general power and lighting, running costs are higher. If your heater is on tariff 33 it typically runs for about 18 hours a day, usually pausing between 6–9am and 6–9pm. Tariff 31, the most economical option, supplies electricity only during off-peak hours, generally from 9pm to 6am.
It’s worth noting that tariff 31 is usually unsuitable for hot water cylinders under 250 litres when the household has two or more occupants.
Electric hot water systems come in a broad range of storage sizes, from compact 25-litre units for kitchens and single basins to large 400-litre tanks for bigger homes. Below is a general guide to tank capacities and typical household matches (actual needs will vary):
50L & 80L: Best for 1–2 people in small apartments. These sizes only operate on tariff 11 and aren’t suitable for off-peak tariffs.
125L: Good for 2–3 people in a unit or small townhouse when connected to tariff 33.
160L: Suited to 2–4 people in a unit or small townhouse on tariff 33.
250L: Meets the needs of 2–4 people on tariff 31 in most three-bedroom homes, and up to 6 people on tariff 33.
315L: Appropriate for 3–5 people on tariff 31, or up to 7 people on tariff 33.
400L: Ideal for 4–7 people on tariff 31, up to 9 people on tariff 33, and as many as 12 people on tariff 11.

Rheem
Read More
Rheem is widely recognised in the hot water industry, known internationally for reliable products and supported by one of the sector’s largest marketing programs. In Australia Rheem produces a variety of electric hot water systems: mild steel vitreous enamel (VE) models assembled in Sydney and stainless steel units manufactured in Melbourne at the former AquaMAX facility. Under the Rheem umbrella you’ll also encounter well-known domestic hot water brands such as AquaMAX, Vulcan and Solahart. Warranty periods vary from 5 to 12 years depending on tank size and construction; to keep the warranty valid and prolong the life of the cylinder, servicing is required at least every five years. Servicing should include replacing the sacrificial anode on vitreous enamel models, and it’s advisable to also renew the pressure and temperature relief valve during service. At Maroochydore Hot Water we regularly recommend Rheem hot water systems for their proven reliability, extensive product range and the confidence that comes with a leading brand — and our Maroochydore plumbers can assist with installation, gas and electric repairs and ongoing servicing.
AquaMAX Pro
Read More
The AquaMAX brand dates back to 1988; it remained family-run until Rheem acquired the company in 2009, by which time AquaMAX had sold over 500,000 electric hot water systems. AquaMAX has long been regarded within the industry for reliable quality, particularly for its stainless steel hot water products. Their stainless steel cylinders continue to be manufactured in Victoria, while the mild steel VE electric hot water range is produced at Rheem’s Sydney facility. AquaMAX hot water systems carry warranties from seven to ten years depending on cylinder capacity — smaller tanks typically attract shorter warranty periods. A service is recommended before five years, with electrode/anode replacement especially important to extend the life of the tank.
Vulcan
Read More
Vulcan is a reliable hot water brand produced by Rheem, positioned as Rheem’s budget-conscious range. Offering solid performance without a high price tag, Vulcan electric hot water systems use mild steel with a vitreous enamel lining, engineered to provide dependable service in Australian homes. Warranty: 7 years for the 50L electric storage model and 10 years for units from 80L up to 400L. To prolong the life of the cylinder, replace the sacrificial anode during years 4 to 5 of operation; this routine maintenance helps prevent corrosion and keeps the unit performing well. At Maroochydore Hot Water, we endorse Vulcan hot water systems as an affordable, dependable option — and we can help with installation, repairs and servicing of gas and electric systems.
Rinnai
Read More
Rinnai has long been recognised as a frontrunner in gas hot water, and until recently their electric hot water units were either imported from China or produced by Dux in NSW. Rinnai now operates its own manufacturing facility in Victoria, where the Hotflo electric hot water systems are built domestically.
The electric Rinnai lineup ranges from space-saving 25 litre models (perfect for kitchenettes and small areas) up to 400 litre tanks for larger homes. Warranty: 7 years on 25L and 50L units, and 10 years on the larger capacities. Note: to keep the warranty valid, a service is required every five years (or sooner). At Maroochydore Hot Water, we supply and endorse Rinnai hot water systems for their dependable performance, energy efficiency and the reassurance of Australian-made quality — and our Maroochydore plumbers can assist with installation, repairs and ongoing servicing of both gas and electric systems.
Dux
Read More
Dux has been a respected name in Australian hot water for over a century. Although the company is no longer Australian owned, it still manufactures dependable systems suited to local conditions. All Dux electric hot water units use mild steel cylinders with a vitreous enamel lining, providing long-lasting performance for homes of various sizes. Most models are produced in Moss Vale, NSW, with tank capacities from compact 25 litres up to 400 litres. Warranty periods depend on capacity: 7 years on the cylinders of the 25L and 50L models, and 10 years on larger sizes. At Maroochydore Hot Water, our Maroochydore plumbers frequently recommend Dux hot water systems for their consistent reliability, and we keep a broad selection in stock for prompt installation and repairs of gas and electric hot water systems.
Thermann
Read More
Thermann is sold exclusively through the Reece Plumbing Supplies network, with their electric hot water units produced by Dux. Built from mild steel and lined internally with vitreous enamel, Thermann cylinders include a sacrificial anode to guard against corrosion. That anode should be replaced within five years to help the unit reach its expected service life. Thermann electric models carry warranty terms equivalent to the Dux Proflo range: seven years for 25L and 50L units, and ten years for larger capacities. At Maroochydore Hot Water, we hold Thermann heaters in high regard for their dependable performance and quality — and our Maroochydore plumbers regularly install and service these hot water systems, covering both installation and repairs for gas and electric models.
