Electric hot water systems
Electric hot water systems offer a cost-effective, dependable option for households, ensuring a steady flow of hot water. Maroochydore Hot Water provides straightforward, efficient electric hot water installations and repairs with reliable service.
Electric hot water systems
Electric hot water systems are still the predominant choice in Australian homes and have been produced domestically for more than a century. Although the basic technology is familiar, contemporary units use better materials and thicker, denser insulation around the storage cylinder. This increased insulation helps keep heat longer, cutting heat loss and boosting efficiency compared with pre-2000 models.
These units work similarly to a kettle by using a heating element and come in three common power ratings for the Queensland market: 1.8kW, 2.4kW and 3.6kW (with a small number of 4.8kW models in select areas where higher power is available). Major manufacturers such as Rheem, Dux, Vulcan, AquaMAX and Rinnai offer models in these ratings.
Bear in mind that element size does not change the total energy requirement — a 1.8kW element draws half the power of a 3.6kW element but will take roughly twice as long to heat the same volume of water to the same temperature.
Most electric hot water systems use mild steel tanks with an internal vitreous enamel lining protected by a sacrificial anode; stainless steel tanks are also offered, while the old copper-style heaters are no longer manufactured.
Maroochydore Hot Water supplies and installs dependable electric hot water systems, with full installation and repairs by an experienced Maroochydore plumber for gas and electric options.

I found SunCity Hot Water on google after a friend told me they had used them. I rang for a call-out and as it was Friday they said they could not do it till Monday. A while later they rung and said they would come around lunchtime as they were doing a job nearby. The job was done quickly and efficiently and I had hot water back within 2 hours. I realized the problem must have been there for months as the water was so lovely and hot that night. Very pleased that they took the time to come to me so I didn't have to wait till the Monday. Replaced and relocated electric hot water system with a heat pump at a competitive price.
Sun City Hot Water did a fantastic job. Were very easy to deal with from quote to finish. Took the time to understand what I wanted and explain how existing plumbing needed to be modified to relocate. On installation day they phoned ahead (always appreciated) and reconfirmed new placement etc before starting. Work was very neat and professional. Made sure that everything was working and cleaned up before leaving.

An electric hot water unit
An electric hot water system can make up roughly a third of your electricity bill if you don’t have solar PV exporting to the grid. On tariff 11, which supplies power 24/7 at the standard general-use rate for lighting and appliances, running costs are higher. If your system is on tariff 33 it typically runs for about 18 hours a day, commonly switching off between 6–9am and 6–9pm. Tariff 31, the most economical choice, only supplies power during off-peak periods, generally from around 9pm to 6am.
It’s worth noting that tariff 31 is usually unsuitable for hot water cylinders under 250 litres when the dwelling is occupied by two or more people.
Electric hot water systems come in many storage sizes, from compact 25-litre units for kitchens or single sinks to 400-litre tanks suited to larger households. Below is a general sizing guide for tank capacity and household suitability (actual needs will vary with usage):
50L & 80L: Best for 1–2 people in small units. These sizes generally only operate on tariff 11 and are not suitable for off-peak tariffs.
125L: Appropriate for 2–3 people in a unit or small townhouse when used with tariff 33.
160L: Suitable for 2–4 people in a unit or small townhouse on tariff 33.
250L: Works for 2–4 people on tariff 31 in most three-bedroom homes, and can serve up to 6 people on tariff 33.
315L: Suitable for 3–5 people on tariff 31, or up to 7 people on tariff 33.
400L: Ideal for 4–7 people on tariff 31, up to 9 people on tariff 33, and as many as 12 people on tariff 11.

Rheem
Read More
Rheem is a highly recognised hot water brand, known worldwide for solid quality and supported by one of the industry’s largest advertising presences. In Australia, Rheem produces an extensive selection of electric hot water systems: mild steel vitreous enamel (VE) models are manufactured in Sydney, while stainless steel units are produced in Melbourne at the former AquaMAX facility. Under the Rheem umbrella you’ll also see other well-known domestic hot water names such as AquaMAX, Vulcan and Solahart. Warranty periods vary from 5 to 12 years depending on tank size and construction. To maintain warranty validity and prolong the life of your hot water system, servicing is necessary at least every five years — this should include replacing the sacrificial anode on vitreous enamel models and we also recommend changing the pressure and temperature relief valve during service. At Maroochydore Hot Water, our Maroochydore plumbers regularly recommend Rheem systems for their proven reliability, wide product range and the confidence that comes with one of the most trusted names in hot water system installation and repairs, both gas and electric.
AquaMAX
Read More
The AquaMAX brand has been established since 1988; it remained family-run until Rheem acquired the company in 2009, by which time AquaMAX had sold more than 500,000 electric water heaters.
AquaMAX has long been regarded within the industry for its high quality, particularly its stainless steel hot water products.
Their stainless steel models continue to be manufactured in Victoria, while the mild steel VE electric hot water range is produced at Rheem’s Sydney facility.
AquaMAX cylinders are covered by warranties ranging from seven to ten years depending on the tank capacity — smaller cylinders typically carry shorter warranty periods.
A service is recommended before five years of use, including replacing the sacrificial anode, to extend the life of the hot water system.
Vulcan
Read More
Vulcan is a well-regarded hot water label produced by Rheem. Positioned as Rheem’s budget-conscious line, Vulcan delivers solid performance without a high price tag. Vulcan electric hot water units use a mild steel vitreous enamel construction, engineered to provide dependable service in Australian homes. Warranty: 7 years for the 50L electric storage model; 10 years for capacities from 80L up to 400L. To extend the life of the cylinder, replace the sacrificial anode between years four and five of operation — this helps guard against corrosion and keeps the system performing well. At Maroochydore Hot Water, we endorse Vulcan hot water systems as an economical option supported by Rheem’s manufacturing reliability, and our Maroochydore plumbers can assist with installation and repairs for both gas and electric models.
Rinnai
Read More
Rinnai has long been regarded as a frontrunner in gas hot water, and in recent years the company has expanded its electric hot water offerings. Whereas their electric units were previously imported or made by Dux in NSW, Rinnai now operates its own manufacturing facility in Victoria, producing the Hotflo electric hot water systems locally.
The Rinnai electric line includes models from compact 25‑litre units—perfect for kitchenettes or tight spaces—up to 400‑litre tanks suited to larger homes. Warranty: 7 years on 25L and 50L units, and 10 years on larger tanks. Note: to keep the warranty valid, a service is required every five years (or sooner). At Maroochydore Hot Water, our Maroochydore plumbers supply and install Rinnai systems because they offer dependable performance, strong energy efficiency and the reassurance of Australian-made manufacturing for both gas and electric hot water systems.
Dux
Read More
Dux has been a respected name in Australian hot water for over a century. Although no longer Australian-owned, the company still manufactures dependable hot water systems suited to local conditions. Dux electric hot water units use mild steel cylinders lined with vitreous enamel, providing robust performance for homes of varying sizes. Most models are produced in Moss Vale, NSW, and tank capacities span from compact 25 litre units up to substantial 400 litre systems. Warranty coverage differs by size: 7 years on the cylinders of the 25L and 50L models, and 10 years on all larger capacities. At Maroochydore Hot Water, our Maroochydore plumbers recommend Dux hot water systems for their long-standing reliability, and we maintain a broad stock so you can secure the right hot water system — gas and electric — for your property promptly.
Thermann
Read More
Thermann is sold exclusively through Reece Plumbing Supplies, and their electric hot water units are produced by Dux. Built from mild steel and coated internally with a vitreous enamel lining, Thermann tanks include a sacrificial anode to guard against corrosion. That anode should be replaced within five years to help the unit reach its expected service life. Thermann electric models carry the same warranty terms as the Dux Proflo range: seven years for 25L and 50L models and ten years for larger capacities. At Maroochydore Hot Water, we rate Thermann water heaters highly for their dependable performance and solid build.
